Iowa is the latest state to be featured in the Mint’s America’s Beautiful Quarters® Program with its Effigy Mounds National Memorial coin.
The newest 25-cent coin launches today, February 6, 2017 and is available in a 40-cent roll and a 100-cent bag. The rolls and bags of circulating quality Effigy Mounts quarters are manufactured at the US Mint’s facilities in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco.
Designs on Effigy Mound Quarters
The United States Mint has presented thirteen design candidates as possible for the reverse side of the coin (heads). These have been reviewed by the parties of the site, the Fine Arts Commission and the Citizen Mint Advisory Committee.
The winning design has been refined and represents an aerial view of the mounds in the Bears Parade. (See high-resolution photo of the design.)
The reverse characters include “EFFIGY MOUNDS”, “IOWA”, “2017” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Designer Richard Masters designed the image with the sculpture completed by US Mint Engraver Renata Gordon.
In the following US Mint video, Gordon talks about the process of sculpting her design:
Engraved on the reverse side of the coin (face) is an effigy of George Washington, the first President of the United States. This portrait is, and will be, found on the back of all the beautiful regions of America. John Flanagan designed the portrait that began circulating in the quarters in 1932.
Light accents of ‘P’, ‘D’ or ‘S’ are also located on the sides, corresponding to Philadelphia, Denver or San Francisco manufacturing facilities.
Products worth the dollar
Prices for roll and bag products remain the same as last year’s issue and are as follows:
|Product||United States Mint Production Facility||Price|

|Set of two rolls||40 Philadelphia cents & 40 Denver||$32.95|
|Set of three rolls||San Francisco, Philadelphia and Denver||$46.95|
|100 cents bag||San Francisco||$34.95|
|100 cents bag||Philadelphia||$34.95|
|100 cents bag||Denver||$34.95|
Notably, while all coins are made of circulating quality, they have never actually been released into circulation.
The exclusivity of S-Mint Quarters
Today, the Federal Reserve also began distributing new quarters of Effigy Mounds to financial institutions. However, they are from Denver and the Philadelphia Mints. The San Francisco Mint only produces quarters for anesthetic purposes such as for these reels and bags. You won’t find changed S-Mint zones.
Ordering, Coin Forum, Ceremony and Coin Exchange
To order the coin rolls and bags, visit the US Mint’s online store, found here. You can also order by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
Later today, officials from the US Mint will host a special coin forum. Starting at 5:30 p.m. and expected to last about an hour, the forum is at the Effigy Mounds National Monument Visitor Center.
Tomorrow, February 8, an official launch ceremony will introduce the coin. The ceremony took place at the Allamakee Community Area High School Gymnasium in Waukon, IA and began at 10:00 a.m. After the ceremony, attendees can exchange cash for the new coin’s D-roll.
2017 America the Beautiful Quarters
The Effigy Mounds quarter marks the first of five in the ATB series for this year and the thirty-sixth quarter since the program began in 2010.
The upcoming 2017 dollar quarter honors the District of Columbia’s Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Missouri’s Ozark National Scenic Riverwalk, New Jersey’s Ellis Island National Monument, and George Rogers National Historic Park Clark of Indiana.
